Berjaya Sompo Joined AIESEC In Universiti Malaya’s Clean Our Plate Project
Kuala Lumpur, 13 September 2022 – Berjaya Sompo Insurance Berhad (“Berjaya Sompo”) continues its Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) initiative with the “DIY Composting Workshop” in collaboration with AIESEC in Universiti Malaya’s Clean Our Plate project. The workshop was held in conjunction with Berjaya Sompo’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Week.

The Clean Our Plate is a semiannual Malaysian Youth Volunteer project focusing on SDG 12 to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, and AIESEC pioneered it in Universiti Malaya (UM) in 2017.  Director of the Clean Our Plate project, Naqib al-Hussaini said, “We believe by collaborating with Berjaya Sompo, the impact of our project can be amplified and more awareness can be created among the community”. As a youth-run organisation, AIESEC in UM was truly grateful to be given such an opportunity by Berjaya Sompo.

This virtual workshop aimed to educate Berjaya Sompo’s staff on food waste awareness and fully utilise food waste through home composting. A total of 160 Berjaya Sompo’s staff benefited from the workshop and gained insight through interactive activities such as online quiz sessions during the workshop. Meanwhile, by providing an opportunity for AIESEC in UM’s members to deliver the workshop for Berjaya Sompo’s staff, it is also an initiative to develop the youth’s personal development skills.

“According to SWCorp Malaysia, the households sector accounts for 44.5 percent of the 16,667.5 tonnes of food waste generated in Malaysia daily. To curb this ongoing problem and raise awareness among the community about food wastage, Berjaya Sompo Insurance is pleased to support AIESEC’s initiative,” said Mr. Tan Sek Kee, Chief Executive Officer of Berjaya Sompo.

He added, "This initiative was part of the Company’s ESG Week event to encourage our team to play an active role in climate change. We hope to cultivate the awareness that everyone can contribute towards sustainability no matter how small the action is.”
