Malaysians are advised to temporarily postpone non-essential travel to Saudi Arabia, including travel for Umrah. Those who are currently in, travelling to, or transiting through Saudi Arabia are strongly encouraged to remain vigilant, monitor the latest developments, and follow the advice of local authorities.
As the situation continues to evolve, we have compiled the following FAQ to guide you on how this may impact your SOMPO TravelSafe+ coverage and travel plans.
Is it safe to travel to the Saudi Arabia now?
Malaysian Government has issued a travel advisory urging Malaysians to temporarily postpone non-essential travel to Saudi Arabia, including travel for Umrah. Those who are currently in, travelling to, or transiting through Saudi Arabia are strongly encouraged to remain vigilant, monitor the latest developments, and follow the advice of local authorities.
Can I get a refund for my SOMPO TravelSafe+ policy if I cancel or change my travel plans due to the current conflict?
Yes — in light of the evolving security situation in the Saudi Arabia, many airlines have suspended flights and Wisma Putra has strongly advised Malaysians to postpone non-essential travel.
To support affected travellers, we will allow a full premium refund for cancellation of SOMPO TravelSafe+ (Single Trip) policies provided that:
- The cancellation is due to the Saudi Arabia and other affected countries in Middle East, including affected transit points (e.g. airport closures, suspended connecting flights, or rerouting through impacted areas);
- No claim has been made under the policy;
- The refund request is submitted during the affected period; and
- The trip has not commenced at the time of the cancellation request.
If you choose to revise your travel dates or itinerary to the affected cities instead, the existing policy will be cancelled and a new policy issued to reflect the updated trip details.
This approval applies to cancellation requests received from 10 October 2026 and is granted without the usual requirement for a replacement policy to be issued.
Will SOMPO TravelSafe+ cover flight cancellations, ground arrangements, or Trip Cancellation due to government travel advisories?
No. War and military conflict are excluded under SOMPO TravelSafe+ policy clauses. Therefore, flight cancellations, trip cancellations, or losses to ground arrangements arising from the current conflict — or solely due to government travel advisories — are not covered.
Airlines are required by aviation regulators to provide assistance, such as rebooking or refunds, where applicable.
My flight was delayed because the airline rerouted to avoid conflict zones. Can I claim Travel Delay?
You can claim Travel Delay only if:
- The delay meets the minimum hours stated in your policy; and
- The delay is not caused by war or government action.
If the rerouting is due to war / military-related airspace closures, such delays will not be claimable.
Malaysia Airlines and other regional carriers have suspended flights to Saudi Arabia. Am I covered?
Malaysia Airlines and several regional carriers have suspended or cancelled flights to Saudi Arabia due to security concerns and airport closures. As the underlying cause is related to war and conflict-related events, any resulting losses are not covered under the policy. Customers travelling to Saudi Arabia are advised to stay informed and monitor the latest travel and flight updates issued by their airline.
Will SOMPO TravelSafe+ cover rerouting expenses due to the conflict?
No. Rerouting expenses arising from the Saudi Arabia is not covered and will not be eligible for claims.
If my baggage is delayed because the airline changed its route, can I claim Baggage Delay?
You may claim if:
- The delay is caused by the airline;
- You receive written confirmation from the airline; and
- The cause is not war-related.
If the delay results from airspace closure linked to the ongoing conflict in Saudi Arabia, it is not covered.
If I am stranded overseas due to flight suspensions, does SOMPO TravelSafe+ provide assistance?
Flight suspensions resulting from airspace closures due to war-related events are excluded under the policy's war exclusion clause and are therefore not covered.
If I fall ill or require medical treatment unrelated to the conflict while travelling in the affected region, will I still be covered?
Yes. Non-war-related medical expenses generally remain covered (on a reimbursement basis), provided you are travelling in an area that has not been officially declared unsafe or excluded.
However, any claims directly or indirectly arising from war-related situations are excluded.
If you are travelling to a Middle East destination not currently listed in Wisma Putra’s advisory and not declared unsafe or excluded, your coverage remains valid. Should the destination later be added to the advisory list, coverage limitations may apply.
